Challenge 1:
To make the site customizable
Solution 1:
We used the ASP, JavaScript and VBScript technologies together with some clever graphic design to make our site customizable for users. Our customization utilizes cookies to allow users to alter color themes of our web site. Currently we have five various themes to choose from. In addition to that users can choose from three different font sizes if they have trouble reading the text on our site. Finally, sice we have a splash page, users can either turn it off or back on. When the splash page is off our home page will open automatically when visitors go to our main URL. Go ahead and play with this option by clicking on the "Customize" option on our top navigation bar.
Challenge 2:
To create a glossary function that is fully searchable and that may be viewed at the same time as the user is browsing the site.
Solution 2:
We developed a glossary tool that is accessible for users in many ways. First the main search box on our site has two buttons. One is search and the other is define. The user can enter a term into the search box and click either of the two buttons. By clicking search, site search results are returned. By clicking define a definition from our glossary is returned if one exists. In addition to this, there is a glossary link on top of our web site which splits our site into two frames and opens the entire glossary on the left side while keeping the main page on the right. This allows users to quickly obtain definitions of terms they don't understand as they read articles on our site.
Challenge 3:
To create an automated internal navigation system that tells users present location on the site.
Solution 3:
We fully developed a system we call bresdcrumbs which shows users their current location on the site based on the directory structure of the web site. In addition to that, it also allows users to track back their way through all the pages they visited. This system is fully automated. When a new page is added to the site it will automatically inherit the proper breadcrumbs based on the directory it is placed in. You can see this on top of our pages while navigating through our web site.
